Through Anne’s description of life before going into hiding, the audience learn about the setting of Amsterdam, Holland. The small room of Secret Annex where the play takes place, portrays the living condition, a small room inhabited by almost eight inhabitants with no freedom. Since the hiding is taking place in the portion of Franks office behind the bookcase, it explains why the inhabitants stayed quiet during the day to avoid being seen by other workers. One could feel how the confine of the closed quarters affected the creativity and ambitions of young people like Anne.
