Summary: You will find an artwork (preferably in person but you are welcome to choose an artwork online) to investigate and write about for this assignment. It must be an artwork that you can identify and IS NOT YOUR OWN WORK. This is an opportunity to go to a museum or gallery near you – to discover art you have not seen before or to find out more about a famous work that interests you.
Step 1: Spend time with your chosen artwork. Look at it for a minimum of 30 minutes. DRAW your chosen artwork. You can use a medium of your choice – physical tools like charcoal, pastel, paint, graphite or colored pencil etc. OR virtual means to capture the likeness of your chosen artwork.
Step 2: Identify the artwork you have chosen – title, artist, date, medium, location, scale. Come up with a thesis about the artwork that you find in real life – what is it “about”/what is the message the artist is trying to convey. This should be one paragraph (3 or more sentences)

.
Step 3: Write at least 10 observations (cite specific visual evidence) and explain how these observations either support or disprove your thesis. (500 word minimum body)
Step 4: Write conclusion – was your thesis ultimately correct or incorrect. If your thesis was correct, what research would you do to further prove its correctness (ie. What journals/authors/organizations would provide the information you would need to solidly confirm your thesis is correct) If your thesis was incorrect, where would you look to find out what message the artist was trying to convey/what the art was “about.” (3 or more sentences)
Step 5: Proofread your paper before submitting it. Is it a word doc? YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR PAPER TO CANVAS AS A WORD DOC. Do you have complete sentences? Do you italicize the title of the artwork? Do you properly identify the work – title, artist, date, medium, location, scale? Is your paper coherent/focused? Is this a college-level paper?Â
