Research Design Discussion 1
This week we are exploring study designs. The textbook has a list of limitations
of various study designs. Your goal for this week is read this article:

In the discussion section of the article, there should be a discussion of the
limitations of this article. How do these limitations compare to the limitations
presented in the textbook? (Textbook: Epidemiology by Leon Gordis 5 th edition)
In 350 words, please summarize the article, the limitations, and reflect on where
the authors may have missed some limitations based on the textbook readings.Discussion 2
Analytic epidemiology is all about looking at risk factors for specific diseases. We
have measures such as relative risk, odds ratio, population attributable risk etc.
Select a disease that interests you and evaluate 3 to 4 primary peer-reviewed
articles or meta-analyses on the disease (I pick Ebola). Report back on what the
measures of association are for this disease. Do articles report different values
for the same exposure? Why might this be? Answer Preview
Discussion 1. Addressing the limit
ations of a study ensures that the researcher notifies the audience of the studys scope and shortcomings which might need to be regarded when using the findings of the research. Overall, research limitations should be handled such that the research is used appropriately in practice. The article by Haberer et al. (2013) presents research into the use of antiretroviral medication for HIV prevention in East Africa. The research focuses on the adherence to the use of antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention using randomized clinical trials. The adherence measurement used was seen as monitoring the study participants on the intake of the pills using unannounced pill counts and electronic monitoring. The study suggested that the use of the pills to prevent HIV acquisition was directly related to risk perception, heavy alcohol use, and sexual behavior. The limitations of this study as suggested by the researchers include the reliability and validity of the adherence measurement. Furthermore, the researchers also present the low number
