Case Study Assessment
The following case study is provided to assist you in the mastery of the material for this module. You will review the case and answer the questions that are presented at the end of the case. You are required to seek a minimum of 3 external resources, including your textbook ( as 1 of the 3 resources) for this assessment. Your final discussion should be professional, include detailed information, and be void of opinion. This assessment requires the use of FULL APA 6th ed. formatting. The use of APA level headings in this discussion will allow for organization and flow of discussion and is a recommended component. Faculty will evaluate papers for plagiarism.
All work must be submitted in full APA 6th ed. format. Papers submitted that drastically neglect APA formatting will result in a score of a zero. Partial submission or submission after the deadline will receive a zero.

It is highly recommended that you first type your response in a Word document and save the file – prior to uploading to the dropbox.
This Case Study Assessment should include the reference for the case that you use as well as any external resources. The final submission should consist of a minimum 750 words in the core discussion (excludes title page, abstract, running headers, reference page information). Begin by reading the article “How to Fix the Doctor Shortage”. When considering the following questions in your response, do not include the question or number your answers. Utilize level headings (APA 6th ed. Section 3.03) and minimize (yet when used correctly cite) direct quotes (APA 6th ed., Section 6.03). Your paper should wrap up with a summary of your discussion.
CASE STUDY #1 SYNOPSIS
According to the article “How to Fix the Doctor Shortage,” by D. G. Kirch published in the Wall Street Journal on January 5, 2010, “the United States will face a shortage of more than 125,000 physicians in the next 15 years . . . [and] . . . at least 16,000 more primary care physicians are needed today.”
A decade ago, the story reports, new patients had to wait an average of 8 days to see a family or general p

ractitioner. The author cites criticisms of the U.S. health care workforce for lacking sufficient primary care, and notes the widespread opinion that this situation is directly related to poor reimbursement. “The physician shortage is, in part, a result of expectations in the 1990s that managed care and primary care would greatly drive down the need for physicians, particularly specialists. However, these expectations fell short against the rising needs of an aging, growing population . . .” (Kirch 2010).
Others have argued that there is no shortage of physicians and, rather, that the problem lies in the uneven distribution of physicians between rural and urban areas. Still others blame government policies that drive physicians out of the health care field and say, therefore, that government should not be counted on for the solution to the problem. Now, with health reform, whether there is an overall shortage or not, there definitely needs to be a different mix of doctors, particularly, more doctors who are trained in primary care.
CASE STUDY #1 DISCUSSION 1
Is there a shortage of physicians overall, or only in key areas (both geographically and by specialty)?
What are the key barriers to increasing the number of physicians (consider primary care and specialty physicians)?
What policies might be used to address these issues?
What can hospitals do to recruit and retain physicians? Consider recruitment tactics that are not misguiding (for example avoid tactics such as – new construction, new vision)
What impact does physician-hospital integration and alignment have on the physician shortage?
What impact does international medical programs have on the physician shortage?
Using a table or chart include the projected physician shortages. Include a paragraph of discussion to explain your table or chart. (You may use a chart/table from a resource rather than create your own. Be sure to reference the tool correctly according to APA 6th ed. Chapter 5).
Given the layered aspects of the physician shortage and the understanding that filling this gap reaches beyond the medical schools, what are some alternative strategies?
