is dead. He has a son who suffers from syphilis, a disease he inherited from him. His wife, who was aware of his infidelities from the beginning is devastated but seeks advice from a locally respected Pastor Manders. This life, which she was forced to live with her husband leads to a lot of pent-up anger and acrimony towards her husband before she decides to face the world. Jacob Engstrand, a carpenter by profession, is a local unworthy man, according to the society. He decides to marry a woman who is pregnant, just to secure a sense of dignity and respect. If he knows this {the fact that she married an already pregnant woman} we are not sure. So he gives up his daughter to work in Mrs Alvings house because he himself cannot raise a child. It is later revealed that the carpenters daughter is indeed Captain Alvings daughter, a product of an extramarital affair
