of today (Rother, 2017). According to Jarousse (2015), the ability to manage the care of patients
with chronic diseases is one of the critical issues and emerging trends that will require the health
care field to invest additional resources in the future. The resources needed to offset the rising
cost of treating chronic patients include investing in chronic disease interventions and population
based care. Short-term goals include the development of more chronic illness interventions,
population management and medication regulations. Long-term strategies should require the
reorganization of healthcare delivery and benefits for the chronically ill, making prescription
drugs more affordable, and reducing the demand for healthcare by improving access to care in
underserved areas and programs that focus on prevention and education.
As more individuals become eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid, increased dual
eligible have become the most costly patients in America (Jarousse, 2015). These individuals are
often the most vulnerable and poorest individuals covered by either program due to the nature of
the qualifications for each program. Short term resources include programs that provide
transportation, access to insurance and better communications among health care professionals
and patients. Additional resources must provide a renewed focus on wellness and health
management services intended for sicker individuals (PWC Health Research Institute, 2016).Jarousse (2015) also describes the future move to true consumer driven market. For
example, telehealth technologies, t
ools, and services are becoming an important component of
the health care (Tuckson, Edmunds, & Hodgkins, 2017). Consumers are looking for more
services that cater to their needs. Leaders must focus on innovative communications such as
telehealth that fill gaps in care that result from provider shortages, after-hours clinics, reducing
travel burdens, automated refilling prescriptions, and responding to other business challenges
and consumer expectations (Tuckson, Edmunds, & Hodgkins, 2017).
The Dye and Garman model suggests effective leaders are those who are visionaries
and are able to lead with conviction. Effective leaders are able to ability to develop and
communicate a vision for the organization. It is those values, beliefs and ability to take a stance
that will prepare leaders to meet the challenges of a changing health care landscape (Dye &
Garman, 2015).References
