This was after Eteocles refused to give up the crown as prescribed by his father, Oedipus. Creon, the king of Thebes, declared that Eteocles should be given an honorable burial while Polynices should be disgraced and left unburied in the battlefield. Notably, the Marxist approach in literature is based on the philosophy of Karl Marx whose main argument was that whoever controlled production had full control of the society. Based on this point of view, the means of productions should be left for the masses who operated them rather than the few who owned them. As such, there are a lot of social struggles that are evident in the drama. With power bestowed on the ruler, the society is confined to his demands and orders. Throughout the play, there is a conflict between the higher and the lower class which periodically develops problems. Every character in the play go through different instances of class problems.
