.Written in 1949 by Hughes, Theme for English B presents the experience of a young Black student who is trying to find his true identity via an English class. The speaker presents his life and experience in an English Class where he is the only Black college student in a class dominated by the Whites. The poem addresses the issue of race and identity as Hughes writes this poem to connect the individual struggle with that of his entire race of the African-Americans. When told to write a piece about themselves, the speaker remains in a dilemma of whether to assume his race and take the persona of an English student or remain true to his culture and heritage. The theme of identity gets expressed in the poem to make the reader understand the characters struggles, experience, and emotions and relates to the struggles individuals go through in finding their identity in a society that remains predominated by racial discrimination
