While Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson agree on some things, their poetry shows a range of disagreements between themdisagreements we can later play with to read other poets, artists, life through. Pick one of these disagreements, then write an essay of at least 400 words that follows this format:Title: Give us a title that grabs our attention. Be creative.Paragraph one: Skip an intro, just give us 1-2 sentences that sum up your whole essay. AKA: A thesis Paragraph two: Pick one poet and explain their side of the disagreement. To prove this do a Close Reading of 1 or 2 quotes by this poet. Use MLA in-text citations and quote formatting (â/â to replace line breaks). Note: your quote can be just a few words, or even one word, not even a sentence. Your quotes do not need to be in the order they appear in the poemoften a different order makes more sense. Paragraph three: Explain the other poetâs side of the argument. To prove this do a Close Reading of 1 or 2 quotes by this poet. Use MLA in-text citations and quote formatting (â/â to replace line breaks). Note: your quote can be just a few words, not even a sentence. Your quotes do not need to be in the order they appear in the poemoften a different order makes more sense. Paragraph four: Whose side are you on? This could mean you think they are right, or just that you tend to share their perspective. Explain why you are on this side.Simplify example: You can write on more than this, but I want to make a point he
re. You could write a whole essay on just Whitmanâs âloafeâ vs Dickinsonâs âdwell.â
AUDIENCEYour peers and your professor in this section of COMP 102.
PROCESS1.Pre-writing: (40 minutes)Look through the freewrites we have done this semester so far. You can (re)use anything from themthough youâll obviously need to revise things to work as a whole. Freewrite down some disagreements between Whitman and Dickinson and think about what side you are on. Then watch this video: click here This is just for inspiration. If you donât read Whitmana nd Dickinson like any of the people in the video, thatâs cool too. Now pick a disagreement between Whitman and Dickinson (or 2-3 optional ones) and the corresponding quotes you might use from Whitman and Dickinson. Note: As you go, have a notebook out and write down all possible ideas. These will help later. You may also wish to review the annotations on Perusallall of you have been saying smart stuff over there.2.Draft one: (40 minutes)Write draft 1 of your essay. It can be somewhat rough. Next week youâll revise it and fix up the structure. Itâs better at this point to have too many ideas and have extra stuff that you may or may not use. Submit Draft 1 under Exercise 4A. Be sure to save a copy for yourself too.
EATs: Since this is draft 1, Iâll just be looking for at least five paragraphs, at least 400 words, and at least one quote by Whitman, one by Dickinson, and one by a poem from the Mixes.
