The use of rhetorical appeals in arguments is often crucial as it allows the person arguing to convince the listener using the most effective elements of rhetoric. In the Proposition 8 Commercial, both characters use various rhetorical appeals to advance their points of argument. First, the administrator, John argues from the point of authority thus utilizing ethos; appeal to authority. First, she states that the curriculum has cost taxpayers money and it has to be used. At some point in her argument, she even uses her position of power to intimidate Terry when she asks him whether he wants to take a position against the proposition after his eight years of work in the institution. Essentially, John advances her argument by presenting the rhetorical appeal of ethos mainly by using her position of power to control the argument and showing that the curriculum is authoritative and nothing much can be done about it
